A Cubic Meter (CBM) is a metric unit of volume equal to 1 meter wide, 1 meter long, and 1 meter high (1m × 1m × 1m). In ocean and air freight logistics, CBM is used to measure overall cargo volume to calculate freight charges and container space allocation.

Practical usable capacity is generally 85% to 90% of theoretical maximum due to box padding and loading gaps:

  • 20ft Standard GP Container: ~28 to 30 CBM usable (33 CBM max)
  • 40ft Standard GP Container: ~56 to 58 CBM usable (67 CBM max)
  • 40ft High Cube (HC) Container: ~65 to 68 CBM usable (76 CBM max)

Carriers charge based on whichever is higher: Actual Weight or Volumetric Weight. Volumetric weight reflects physical room occupied (e.g., standard air courier conversion is 1 CBM = 167 kg, while ocean LCL is 1 CBM = 1,000 kg).

Multiply Length × Width × Height (in meters) for a single box, then multiply that result by your Total Quantity of Cartons. If measuring in centimeters, divide total volume by 1,000,000.

Because container dimensions are fixed, carton geometry impacts exact stacking fit. Rotating a carton by 90 degrees can fit an extra row or tier, preventing wasted overhead space.
